JOB DESCRIPTION

Spen-Tech has an opening for a Controls Project Engineer. The general duties and responsibilities of the Project Engineer are to plan, schedule, lead, manage and follow all phases of design, program, startup, debug and installation on projects assigned.

Responsibilities

As a Controls Project Engineer, you will:

​

  • As a Controls Project Engineer you will start a project at the beginning and follow it through final customer installation acceptance. You will review customer specifications, standards / past projects, and work with a team of hardware engineers in designing the complete controls portion of the machine (electrical, fluids, and pneumatics). You are responsible to work with software engineers to develop software using customer standards, past projects and developing new software. You will be responsible for producing a quality design on schedule, getting customer acceptance, reviewing panel build, and assisting as required while the machine is being built and debugged. Travel is possible for customer meetings, field checks, or installation support.

Minimum Requirements​

The following requirements are essential for this position:

 

  • Experienced in designing controls hardware and software.

  • Proficient in logic programming for most PLC and HMI systems

  • Able to work well in a team-oriented environment

  • Must have good time management skills and be able to meet deadlines.

  • Experience in understanding and following customer specifications as well as local and federal standards for automated equipment.

  • Plan, organize and coordinate the work efforts on projects assigned, including the development of detailed engineering schedules.

  • Lead, manage, follow and perform all phases of project controls systems for all projects assigned.

  • Participate in the appropriate meetings to understand the upcoming project and the development of identifying key dates to accomplish project completion.

  • Perform field service as required (both domestic and international). Fill out field service reports in detail.

  • Ensure the team is completing all customer and spentech checklists, design tools for all projects assigned.

  • PREFERRED ABILITIES

  • The abilities listed below are preferred, but we can train a person meeting the above minimum requirements:

  • Experience in electrical and fluid power design, PLC and HMI software

  • Experience in working as part of a team of controls engineers

  • Good communications skills (written and verbal)

  • Familiarity with common national standards (NEC, IEC, CE, UL508)

  • Ability to draft and follow standards

  • Ability to combine standards, past project designs, and new designs

  • Ability to check designs from other engineers for errors or inconsistencies

  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret mechanical prints

  • Experience in conducting field checks of existing equipment

  • Ability to develop and read sequence of operations

  • Provide project guidance to hardware and software personnel.

Education

A bachelor’s degree in electrical / computer engineering or electronics technology and a minimum of five years related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

A minimum of ten years’ experience related to controls engineering

​

Job Training​

Employees in this position usually require training involving on-the-job experience, informal training with experienced workers, and formal training with qualified experts. Spen-Tech regularly provides our employees with all three types of training.

​

Travel

Travel may be required for visiting customer sites, external suppliers etc.  Possession of a valid U.S. passport may be required. Travel can be expected to assist in installing equipment and commissioning in the customer’s facility. The length of stay will vary depending on machine type and complexity, but a total of 20% is possible.
